2003 also saw the start of the "Atikokan Adventure Race" which is turning into a great annual event featuring trekking, mountain biking and, of course canoeing.
Of course, you don’t necessarily have to be in a competition to enjoy the great adventure we have to offer.
Mountain biking is quickly becoming a popular activity for people of all ages. Atikokan, with its’ old roads & trails set in the northern Canadian wilderness is becoming a terrific destination for those bikers wishing to explore some new terrain.
The area offers some great hiking trails – some established and some old logging trails and roads.
Of course, you couldn’t mention Atikokan without also mentioning Quetico Provincial Park and the world class canoeing we have.
Maybe canoeing can be a relaxing, enjoyable pastime, but it can also be filled with heart pounding excitement.

Ask anyone who’s shot some rapids, got disoriented on a portage, or had a black bear steal their food pack away from their campsite at night and they’ll tell you it is nothing if it’s not an adventure.
Or ask anyone who’s tried to do the Hunters Island Loop at all, let alone in record time, and you’ll see pure, sweaty, exhilarating adventure twinkling in their eyes.
We’re seeing more and more kayak travel in the area as well.

You can choose any type of route you want in our area. From flatwater paddling to long, river trips such as the Turtle River route in the White Otter Wilderness.
You can fly in by float plane and paddle out using your strength and wits.
Atikokan is also developing some excellent Nordic (cross country) ski trails throughout Quetico Park.
There’s a reason that competitions such as Raid the North Extreme Adventure Race, and others are coming to Atikokan.
The raw potential of this remote community in Northern Ontario to become a world class centre of adventure travel in all four seasons is great.
Over the next few years, facilities will develop and the word will get out.
And you’ll be able to say "I went there before it was cool!"
