Sample White OtterWilderness Canoe Routes

Although outboard motors are allowed, and a number of flyin outpost cabins and camps area scattered throughout, a trip by canoe is still the best way to travel throughout the White Otter Wilderness.

Although the majority of our guests paddle this vast wilderness, some also choose a square stern canoe with a small outboard, while others choose the added adventure of a fly in / paddle out canoe trip.

The White Otter area is our most popular destination for larger groups such as boy scouts, school & church groups.

Whatever your preference, you’re sure to have a great time in Canada’s White Otter Wilderness area.

A few of our most popular routes are as follows. Accompanying maps are hand drawn, and fairly basic, pointing out approximate routes & portages. Obviously this information can be transposed on to large scale topographic maps for "live" trip routing.

All the routes are interconnected with various put in points so it’s possible to do a number of combined or partial routes. Routes may be done in reverse of what is shown as well.

  1. Clearwater / Pekagoning Lake Circle Routes The route is actually comprised of 3 circle route of 23 miles, 34 miles, & 41 miles, requiring 4 – 5 days, 6 – 7 days & 8 – 9 days respectively.
  2. Some beautiful Canadian wilderness is featured along with some great smallmouth, lake trout, northern pike & walleye fishing.

Probably the biggest feature in this area is the White Otter Castle on White Otter Lake, a popular fly in starting point.

The 3 routes have a total of 48 portages spread throughout.

  3. Wasp Lake Circle Route – again some great wilderness scenery, and great fishing particularly for walleye.
  4. The put in / pick up is at Dashwa Lake.

There are 15 portages in all, totaling 5730 metres. Portage lengths range from 20 metres to 2316 metres.

  5. Branch’s Seine River Lodge to Clearwater West Lakestart right from our dock at our Expedition HQ.

Once you get to Dashwa Lake you can either proceed towards Clearwater West Lake up towards White Otter Lake / Pekagonoing Lake & the Turtle River, or head up the Wasp Lake Circle Route.

This route (SRL to Clearwater) is about 84 km or 50 miles one way. 8 – 10 days is reasonable as a round trip length. Once again, great scenery & fishing.

Watch this page for info on the Turtle River to Little Turtle Lake route.
